Abstract
756.469. Gas turbine plant. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 7. 1954, No. 447/54. Class 110(3) [Also in Groups XXIV, XXXIII and XXXIV] . Two gas tubine engines A and B each have an output shaft 10 which connects to a common propeller gear 12 through an overrunning clutch 14, an intermediate shaft 16, a friction clutch 18, a pinion shaft 19 and a pinion 20. A starter motor 22 drives a shaft 24 on which is splined a. sliding toothed clutch element 26 which may be engaged with mating clutch elements of either of two gears 28 and 30 rotatable with respect to the shaft 24. The gears 28 and 30 couple to gears 32 on the intermediate shafts 16 through gears 33, 34 and 35. The clutch element 26 can be shifted to couple the starter with either gear 28 or gear 30, by a 'sliding fork 36 actuated into either extreme position by solenoids (not shown). The friction: clutches 18 are of the type described in Specification 690,592 (see Group XXIV), and they are engaged and disengaged by a hydraulic system supplied from a pump 46 which also supplies oil to the reduction gear and to the clutches 14 (see Group XXIV) and is driven through gears 64, 54 and an overrunning clutch 60 from the starter 22 or through gears 56, 70 and overrunning clutch 62 from the propeller shaft 62. The clutch 14 is a spring loaded ratcheting type and axial movement of one element thereof against spring action as the result of reverse torque from the propeller D resulting from an engine failure operates a micro-switch 240 which effects disengagement of the failed engine's clutch 18 and shuts off the failed engine's fuel supply. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 690,592.
