Abstract
1,092,745. Engine turning gear; gas turbine plant. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. Sept. 20, 1966 [Oct. 11, 1965], No.42986/65. Headings F1G, F1K and F1Q. In an engine installation having at least two engines 11, 12 each of which is connected to drive accessories mounted upon a respective gear-box 19, 20 and including a single starting means 46 connectible through the respective gear-box to each engine in turn by appropriate operation of clutches one clutch 37, 38 being provided in the drive between the starting means and each one of the gear-boxes and one clutch 13, 14 being provided in the drive between each gear-box and each engine, the arrangement is such that with both or all the engines inoperative the accessories on one or more of the gear-boxes can all be driven by the single starting means. The single starting means 46 may be a starter motor of gas turbine type and the engines 11, 12 may be gas turbine engines. The installation may be designed to power an aircraft and the accessories carried upon the gear-boxes used to power electrical and hydraulic services within the aircraft. Freewheel means may be provided upon the output shaft of the gas turbine type starter motor so that the motor can be stopped when at least one of the engines is running at and above its self sustaining speed. If any one or more of the engines become inoperative then by suitable operation of the clutches the remaining operative engine or engines can be connected to drive the respective gear-box or gear-boxes of the inoperative engine or engines. The control system includes electrically powered means (not shown) for operation of the clutch, interconnected through suitable switching devices with the electrical igniter system and with the fuel system of the starter motor 46. The invention is applicable to other vehicles or stationary plant.
