Abstract
1,116,155. Starting helicopter rotors. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. 6 May, 1966 [6 May, 1965], No. 19182/65. Headings B7G and B7W. [Also in Division F2] A helicopter rotor is spun up by an auxiliary motor 20 powered by a generator 12 driven by a main engine 1. The motor and generator may be electric, but as described, an hydraulic motor 20 and an hydraulic pump 12 are used. A combined clutch and freewheel 5 (see Division F2) connects the main engine to the rotor 8 and this is arranged to engage automatically when its driven shaft is rotating faster than its driving shaft, and then to supply a signal to stop the power supply to the auxiliary motor. As described, the main engine 1 is a gas turbine engine .started by an electric starter motor 11, and the fluid from the pump 12 driven by the engine, when the auxiliary motor 20 is no longer powered, is diverted by a valve 14 to an hydraulic starter motor 22 on .a second main engine 2, driving through a conventional freewheel 9. The auxiliary motor 20 may be used in flight as an hydraulic pump .to supply for example flying controls.
