[Also in Group XXVI] An arrangement for starting gas turbine engines comprises a unit including a gas turbine 1, a compressor 2, and a combustion chamber 4, which unit supplies a starter turbine 5, means being provided to cut off the fuel supply to the turbine 1 when the compressor discharge pressure of the engine to be started reaches a predetermined value. The starter turbine 5 drives the engine to be started through a reduction gear 6 and a clutch 7. The compressor 2 and the gas turbine 1 are connected co-axially by a shaft 3 which is actuated by an electric motor 9 or other prime mover of reduced power. The fuel supply to the combustion chamber 4 is controlled by an electrically actuated valve itself controlled by a pressure sensitive switch, the arrangement being such that the fuel valve is closed as soon as the discharge pressure of the engine to be started attains the predetermined value to which the pressure switch has been set and at which the engine is self-sustaining. The complete starting arrangement is conveniently housed in the front section 8 of the gas turbine engine to be started.
