451,125. Turning - gear. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and GRAHAM. D. H., 1, Eastleigh Avenue, Coventry. April 8, 1935, No. 10860. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter which can be operated by an electric motor or by hand, a sun-wheel E on the shaft A<1> of the motor A drives a double set of planet-wheels D, one set of which engages an internal gear F rotatable in one direction only, and the other set engages an internal gear G which drives the dog clutch T of the starter. As shown, the gear G drives the clutch T through a sun-pinion O keyed to the hub of the gear G, planet-wheels P and an internal gear Q normally held stationary by spring - loaded clutch plates R which slip in case of backfire ; the planet-wheels are supported by a sleeve S in which the dog clutch T is splined. The clutch T is moved into engagement with the engine by means of a pin U fixed in a sleeve V.and engaging helical slots W in the hub of the gear G. A manual starting shaft L is connected by bevel gearing J, K to the internal gear F, and a one-way ratchet M between the shaft L and the casing allows the rotation of the shaft L and the gear F in one direction only. A freewheel roller clutch N is interposed between the motor shaft A<1> and the casing and prevents rotation of the motor shaft by the shaft L.
