Abstract
558,360. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 25, 1942, No. 8740. Convention date, July 19, 1941. Addition to 553,611. [Class 7 (v)] An engine starter drive comprises a pinion 8 slidably journalled on a power shaft 2 and on a screwed sleeve 6 secured thereto and moved axially into engagement with an engine gear 9 by a nut 12 threaded on the sleeve 6, a rubber or like annulus 13 between flanges on the nut and pinion being compressed to transmit torque by friction when the pinion abuts a stop shoulder 4 on the shaft 2. When the engine becomes initially self-operative, a centrifugal latch 17 mounted in the sleeve 6 holds the pinion in mesh with the engine gear until the speed of the shaft falls below a predetermined value, while the nut 12 releases its pressure on the annulus 13. As shown, the latch 17 is normally held flush with the surface of the sleeve 6 by a split spring ring 18, Fig. 4. The annulus 13 and the flanges on the pinion and nut are enclosed by a sleeve 14. In a modification, the enclosing sleeve has a flange engaging the teeth of the' pinion, and the rubber annulus has an inwardly projecting portion bearing on the nut.
