525,560. Securing pinions on shafts. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1939, No. 3445. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1938. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In an engine-starter drive comprising a driving member 2 movable into and out of mesh with an engine gear 3 and a connection between the power shaft 1 and the member 2 including a body 14 of elastically deformable material, the elastic body 14 is frictionally engaged externally and internally by transmission member 11, 15 and is compressed radially between the members 11, 15 in response to the torque transmitted to tighten the frictional engagement. As shown, the member 2 is a pinion connected by a barrel 27 to a nut 22 threaded on a screw shaft 7 in order to move the pinion axially into mesh with the engine gear 3. The member 15 is a split sleeve having cam faces 19, 21 engaged by cams 9, 18 on the shaft 7 and on the driving head 5 on the shaft 1, whereby the sleeve 15 is expanded radially to compress the body 14 when the pinion 2 is fully in mesh. The surfaces of the members 11, 15 are roughened or ribbed to engage the elastic body 14. An anti-drift spring 24 and a re-entry spring 26 are provided in the barrel 27. In a modification, the transmission member 11 is secured on the driving head 5 by a split ring to allow its removal without dismounting the drive, and the split sleeve 15 is expanded by a tapered head on'the screw shaft 7. In a further modification, the elastic body 14 itself has a tapered bore engaged by a correspondingly shaped split sleeve expanded by a conical head on the screw shaft. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the elastic body 14c has a tapered bore engaged by a thrust member 35 having a radial flange 36 fitting in the barrel 11c and a tapered portion 37 connected with the tapered end 9c of the screwshafts 7c by radial projections on the end 9c engaging slots in the portion 37. The body 14c is thereby compressed axially as well as radially.
