Abstract

552,199. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1941, No. 12385. Convention date, Sept. 26, 1940. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine-starter drive comprising a pinion 8 slidably journalled on a power shaft 1 and driven through a barrel member 11 connected to a nut 13 on a screw shaft 2 fixed to the shaft 1, the nut and barrel are connected by an elastically compressible member 22. As shown, the member 22 is a split ring of material such as rubber, the ends of which may be provided with shields 22a, 22b and are engaged by an abutment 17 on the flange 15 of the nut 13 and an abutment 19 fixed to the barrel 11. The latter has a toothed flange 12 engaging the teeth of the pinion 8, a spring 27 normally holding the pinion and barrel in extended relation. A spring 32 normally holds the nut 13 in engagement with the end of threaded portion of the screw shaft, ready for re-entry on rotation of the shaft, and an anti-drift spring 29 is provided.
