Abstract
554,165. Turning gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1941; No. 16428. Convention date, Feb. 25. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter comprising a pinion 4 moved into and 'out of mesh with an engine gear by means including a screw shaft 2 and nut 6, a yielding overrunning driving connection including an elastically compressible friction member 22 is disposed between the nut and pinion. As shown, the pinion 4 is slidably journalled on the power shaft 1 and the screw shaft 2 is secured to the shaft 1 by a pin 3 covered by a sleeve 32. A barrel 8 journalled on the nut 6 is provided with slots 14 engaged by lugs on a flange 11 fixed on the pinion, and has an internal shoulder 16 abutting against a stop shoulder 17 on the screw shaft when the pinion 4 meshes with the engine gear. The member 22 is a rubber annulus frictionally held between a flange 7 on the nut 6 and a flange 18 fixed on the barrel 8, the parts being enclosed by a sleeve 23 flanged at 24. The parts are yieldingly held in idle position, with the nut 6 on a smooth part 28 of the screw shaft, by a slight spring 26. In a modification, the pinion is held in mesh with the engine gear as long as the starting motor is energized, a centrifugal latch being pivoted on the flange 7 of the nut and engaging a notch in the screw shaft 2 until the speed is sufficient to release the latch by centrifugal action. A spring is provided between the flange 7 and barrel 8 to assist in separating the driving and driven flanges 7, 18.
