Abstract
602,421. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 17, 1945, No. 27234. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1944. [Class 7 (v)] An electric starter for an engine comprises a floating armature 4 normally held in the offcentre position by a spring-urged member 8, a pinion 26 axially movable on the armature shaft extension 17 and connected thereto by an over-running clutch 36, 30, being moved into partial engagement with the engine gear 27 when the armature is centred by energizing it. When the starter button is pressed the part 41 of a starter solenoid 39 moves upwardly and the energized armature moves to the left so that a latch 12 engages the slot 16, a ball 43 engages a slot 42 in the shaft 5, and the pinion 26 partially engages the engine gear 27. A nut 28 then moves along the screw shaft 21 until the pinion 26 abuts the stop 44, the spring 38 is compressed and the teeth of the clutch members 30, 36 engage and so turn the engine through the spring 23. When the engine starts the clutch 30, 36 is broken and the pinion 26 is driven at a greater speed than the shaft 17 but the pinion is not disengaged from the engine completely until the engine is running satisfactorily and the starter button is released so forcing the latch 12 out of the slot 16 and allowing the de-energized armature to be returned to the shown inoperative position by the spring 9.
