Abstract

558,629. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. July 8, 1942. No. 9514. Convention date, July 9, 1941. [Class 7 (v)] An engine starter comprises a screwed sleeve 6 secured upon a reduced portion of a power shaft 2 with its periphery flush with the shaft ; the starter-pinion 9 is slidably journalled on the sleeve 6 and shaft 2 and a rubber or like annulus 17 is interposed between flanges 15, 13 on the pinion and on a nut 12 travelling on the screwed sleeve to bring the pinion into engagement with a washer 4 abutting against a stop shoulder 3. As shown in Fig. 1, the flange 15 is integral with a barrel 14 enclosing the annulus 17 and the parts are held in assembled relation by a split lock ring 18. In a modification, the flange of the nut has lugs slidable in slots in the barrel, and the nut is provided with a detent pressed by the rubber annulus against the threaded sleeve to retain the parts in idle position. In a further form, Fig. 4, the flanges 62, 63 and the annulus 64 are embraced by a sleeve 65 having its ends turned over the flanges ; the drive is formed as a unit, the shaft 51 of which is threaded at 57 and is formed with a socket 52 forming a stop shoulder 53 and attachable to the power shaft 54 by a cross pin 55 retained by a thimble 56. The threads 57 terminate at 66 and re-entry of the nut 61 in the threads is ensured by a split spring washer 67 on a ring 85 connected to the shaft 51 by a pin 70. Specification 554,165 is referred to.
