Abstract

536,456. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 14, 1939. No. 30057. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1938. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter drive comprising a driving member 8 movable into and out of engagement with an engine member 7 and connected to the starter shaft 1 through an annulus 19 of elastically deformable material attached at its ends to members 3, 16 and placed under torsion when torque is transmitted, the annulus is also placed under axial tension when the torque is transmitted. As shown, the members 3, 16 are flanges on a member 2 secured to the shaft 1 by a pin 4 and on a barrel 15 enclosing the annulus 19, The pinion 8 is integral with a sleeve 6 slidably journalled on the shaft 1 and having a screw-thread 9 for engagement with the flange 16. The pinion is normally held by a light spring 11 in contact with a stop 12, and with the flange 16 engaging a smooth portion 17 of the sleeve 6. A ring 25 in the barrel limits the extension of the annulus 19 when the pinion is brought by rotation of the shaft 1 &c. into mesh with the member 7. In a modification, Fig. 6, the pinion 64 is within the drive in the idle position and moves outwards into mesh with the engine member 65. A screwed member 66 is welded to the pinion and co-operates with a threaded sleeve 79 carrying a flange 81. The ends of the annulus 83 are attached to the flange 81 and to a flange 75 of a barrel 68 secured on the starter shaft by a disc 69 and drive member 62. The flange 75 and disc 69 are secured to the barrel by lugs engaging notches in the barrel and retained by lock rings 74, 78. A re-entry spring 87 maintains initial engagement between the threads of the members 66, 67.
