Abstract

406,506. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. April 21, 1933, No. 11706. Convention date, April 22, 1932. [Class 7 (v).] An engine starter drive comprises a sleeve 4 loosely mounted on a power shaft 1 and yieldingly driven therefrom, and a pinion 2 loosely mounted on the shaft 1 and connected to the sleeve, so that rotation of the sleeve moves the pinion 2 axially into mesh with an engine member 3 and thereafter rotates it to crank the engine. As shown, the sleeve 4 is connected through a coil spring 23 to a barrel 5 enclosing the spring and sleeve and mounted on the shaft 1 by means of a collar 6, which is keyed and pinned to the shaft and has slots engaged by tongues 11 on the barrel. The spring 23 is secured at its outer end to an annular member 13 having radial lugs 14 engaging in slots 15 in the barrel and retained by a split ring 16 ; at its inner end, the spring is secured to an annular member 17 mounted on a non- circular hub 18 on the sleeve 4 and retained by a lip 19. A nut 26 is threaded on the sleeve 4 and rigidly connected to the pinion 2 by an inner barrel 27. Outward movement of the nut 26 on the sleeve is limited by a stop nut 28. A spring 32 prevents drifting of the pinion into mesh with the member 3, and a spring 29 normally urges the nut 28 into initial engagement with the threads of the sleeve 4.
