Abstract

[Also in Division H2] In an I.C. engine starter mechanism the rotor of the electric motor is mounted on a tubular spindle which surrounds the output shaft and is secured to it at the end remote from the pinion. Rotor 12 is mounted on a tubular spindle 13 surrounding shaft 14 which carries a commutator 15 and a bearing bush 16 supported on a spigot 17 of cap 18 forming a closure for the casing 10. Shaft 14 has splines forming an interference engagement with splines on spindle 13 and has a central waist to provide torsional resilience, the forward extension 14a being mounted in bearing 19 in cover 20. A pinion 22, formed on sleeve 21 which is engaged by a quick pitch screw thread with shaft extension 14a, is retained in engagement with engine toothed wheel 23 by balls 39 held in recesses 41 by a spring loaded collar 37, the balls seating in groove 40 in the disengaged position. A solenoid winding 24 when energized draws in armature 25 against spring 26 until ring 27, held against abutment 25a by spring 28 engages ring 29 to move pinion 22 into engagement with wheel 23. If the teeth on pinion 22 and wheel 23 engage end to end the armature continues to move against spring 28 until contacts 36, 36a close and the pinion is thrown into engagement by the quick start thread. Bolts 31, (Fig. 2) (not shown), pass through flange 30, a transparent piece 32, casing 10 and end cap 18. A pair of curved brushes 33 and an annular carrier 35, for a further pair of brushes 33a are mounted on bolts 31.
