Abstract

172,512. Lucas, H., and Turner, W. C. Nov. 24, 1920. Turning-gear.-An electric starter comprises an internally and externally screwed sleeve d mounted on the screwed shaft a of the starting motor b, an internally screwed pinion e carried by the sleeve d, and a thrust spring g bearing against collars c, f on the shaft and the sleeve. Rotation of the shaft a effects axial movement of the pinion e into engagement with the toothed fly-wheel h. If the teeth clash, the sleeve d moves axially against the spring g and allows relative rotation of the pinion e and wheel h to bring the teeth into position for engagement.
