Abstract

197,793. Rogers, F. H., (Eclipse Machine Co.). March 20, 1922. Turning-gear.-An engine starter comprises a rotatable member ou u-hicli a driving member is mounbed for axial movement thereof and rotation therewith, and means arranged for axial and rotary movement to actuate the driving member and to cause it to rotate relatively to such means whenever its axial is arrested. In the form shown, the driving member is a smoothbored pinion 11 and is moved axially into mesh with an engine gear, and then driven, by a nut 17 mnunted on a screw-threaded part 8 of the rotat. able sleeve 9. The pinion 11 and nut 17 are formed with end discs 14, 18 held apart by a spring 24 and having corresponding cam faces 16, 20. If the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the engine gear, the axial movement of the nut 17 continues and the pinion is slightly rotated, by the engagement of the cam faces 16, 20, until it can mesh with the engine gear. At the end of the axial movement, the pinion is arrested by a stop 10 on the sleeve 9 and is driven from the nut through the cam faces 16, 20. The parts are normally retained in the position shown by a spring 13 between the stop 10 and a sliding collar 12, and the parts are stopped suddenly on their return by the engagement of a notch 28 by a tooth 27 on a shell 21 enclosing the discs 14, 18. The sleeve 8, is driven from the armature shaft 2 of an electric motor 1 through a spring 5. The energy initially stored in the spring by the rotation of the motor may be given up more slowly by arranging the coils of the spring in frictional contact with each other. Specifiactions 20811/14 and 175,779 are referred to.
