Abstract
389,219. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 2, 1932, No. 125. Convention date, Jan. 2, 1931. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter in which the pinion 24 is moved axially into engagement with the engine gear 26 by the relative rotation of two sets of inter-threaded helical springs 14, 29 anchored respectively to the starter shaft 10 and the pinion, the mechanism is housed and protected by a sleeve 38 which limits the axial engaging movement of the pinion. As shown, the springs 14 have axial extensions engaging slots in a collar 11 keyed and pinned to the shaft 10, and are retained by a spring ring 18, traversing aligned grooves 19, 21 in the collar and the springs, and by a surrounding thimble 22. The springs 29 are similarly secured to an enlargement 28 on the pinion. The housing sleeve 38 is held in place by a screw 13 which secures the collar 11 to the shaft 10, and has a flange 42 which is engaged by the pinion enlargement 28 at the end of the meshing movement of the pinion. A light spring 43 normally holds the pinion out of engagement with the engine gear 26.
