Abstract
390,577. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 24, 1931, No. 35638. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1930. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter in which a pinion 27 is driven from the shaft 11 of a starting-motor 10 through sets of inter-threaded helical springs 21, 34 anchored respectively to the shaft 11 and to the pinion, and moves automatically into mesh with an engine member 28, the springs 21 are secured at their outer ends 22 in a circumferential groove 18 and oblique grooves 19 in an enlargement 17 of a collar 12 mounted on the shaft 11 by means of a key and a set-screw 14 retained by a spring ring 16. The springs 34 are similarly secured to an enlargement 31 of the pinion hub 29, and the springs are retained in the grooves by retaining sleeves 23, 37 having flanges 24, 26 and 38, 39 respectively. The meshing movement of the pinion compresses a light spring 46 and is limited by an abutment sleeve 42 mounted on a reduced extension 41 of the collar 12 by means of depressions 43 engaging a groove 44. The springs 21, 34 have a rectangular section of considerable depth to provide ample stiff. ness and friction surfaces.
