Abstract

174,274. Rogers, F. H., (Eclipse Machine Co.). Dec. 13, 1920. Turning-gear.-An electric or other starter of the screwed-pinion type comprises in one form, Fig. 1, a sleeve 2 having one part provided with screw-threads 14 for driving engagement with the bore of the starter pinion 12 and another part provided with threads 15 in loose engagement with the pinion bore. The threads 15 are sufficient to advance the pinion into engagement with the engine members 7 but allow the pinion to stop if its teeth clash with those of the member 7. The pinion 12 may be counterbored as shown at 17 to facilitate engagement with the threads 14. The sleeve 2 is driven from the shaft 1 of the starting-motor through a spring 4. In a modification, Fig. 3, the threads 15 are replaced by a groove 18, 19 engaged by a spring-pressed pin 24 on the pinion, which rides out of the groove if the teeth clash.
