Abstract

139,754. Eclipse Machine Co., (Assignees of Bergmann, C.). March 3, 1919, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-A starter pinion 9 is internally threaded to engage one or more coiled springs 8 surrounding, and connected at one end 5<a> to, a shaft 2 driven by an electric or other motor or by hand. The springs serve as screw-threads along which the pinion moves automatically into engagement with the toothed fly-wheel 7, and also a; spring driving-connexions between the shaft 2 and the pinion. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the shaft 2 is a sleeve pinned at the enlarged end 4 to the armature shaft 1 of an electric motor; two springs 8 are shown, and the pinion has clutch faces 9<a> which engage the ends 8<a> of the springs at the end of the travel of the pinion. In a modification, the clutch face 9<a> on the pinion first engages the end of the spring, and, after extending the spring, engages a clutch face on the shaft 2 to give a positive drive. In another form, the end of the spring is not bent over to form a clutch member; the movement of the pinion compresses the spring instead of extending it. and finally brings the pinion into engagement with a shoulder on the shaft 2 to give a positive drive. Specification 20811/14 is referred to.
