Abstract
234,235. Bate, J., and Vandervell & Co., Ltd., C. A. April 1, 1924. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter in which a loose pinion is automatically moved axially into mesh with an engine gear, the pinion a being formed on or secured to a sleeve c cut at the ends to form surfaces c<1>, c<2> co-operating with members d', d<2> on the shaft b, one or both of the members d<1>, d<2> is or are slidable on the shaft b. As shown, the members c<2>, d<2> have curved faces to effect the axial movement and clutch faces for driving the pinion when in mesh with the engine member, and the slidable member d<2> is held in its normal position by a heavy spring e. A lighter spring f retains the pinion a in its normal position. The co-operating surfaces at one or both ends may be given such curvatures that the axial movement of the pinion is effected first slowly and then quickly.
