Abstract

406,462. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 28, 1933, No. 2751. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1932. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter comprising a pinion 11 moving axially on a threaded sleeve 9 driven from the shaft 1 through a coil spring, the pinion is prevented from rebounding towards the driven gear of the engine by a centrifugal element in the form of an eccentrically weighted detent ring or disc 17 loosely surrounding the shaft 1. In one form, Fig. 2, the ring 17 is retained in a groove 18 in the sleeve 9 by a split ring 20. Longitudinal extensions 21 of the pinion teeth are provided with retaining shoulders 19 having a face 22 steeper than the face 23. The ring 17 is normally maintained in its lowest position by gravity, and rides over the face 22 when the pinion 11 is moved axially into mesh with the engine gear by rotation of the shaft 1. When the engine starts and the pinion moves axially out of mesh, the ring 17 rides over the face 23 and is then maintained by centrifugal action in its eccentric position, co-operating with the face 23 to prevent return of the pinion so long as the shaft 1. is rotating. In modifications, (1) the weighted ring slides over the face of a flange on the pinion and is retained by an annular disc and a snap ring ; (2) the ring 33, Fig. 9, is pivoted at 34 on a flange on the pinion and normally urged into latching position by a spring 35 ; (3) a weighted detent member 37, Fig. 12, sliding on a flange 40 on the pinion and controlled by a spring 44 is connected to the flange by pins 39, 41 engaging slots; and (4) a detent ring 52, Fig. 15, is normally centered by a spring 54 and has a peripheral groove 55 for engagement with lugs 58 on extensions 57 of the pinion teeth.
