Abstract

883,608. Friction clutches. NORMALAIR Ltd. March 3, 1960, No. 7477/60. Class 80 (2), A coil friction clutch is engaged by an electromagnetic disc clutch. As shown in Fig. 1, a helical spring 17 encircling a drum 5 fast with a driving pulley 1 is secured at one end to a sleeve 7 fast with a driven shaft 8 and at the other end to a sleeve 14 axially fixed but rotatably mounted on the driven sleeve 7. An armature 22 is slidably mounted on the sleeve 14 and is connected thereto by flexible arms 23, the armature being moved axially into frictional engagement with a wall of the driving pulley 1 when a stationary electromagnetic coil 27 is energized. The sleeve 14 is thus rotated and the spring 17 contracted on to the driving drum 5 and thus drives the shaft 8. In the modification of Fig. 5, one end of the spring 17 is connected to a helically grooved part 34 of the driven sleeve 7 which part 34 leads down progressively to the drum 5 which is of smaller diameter. The other end of the spring is secured to a bearing ring 35 rotatably mounted but axially fixed on a sleeve 33, and a resilient disc 32 is secured to the bearing ring. When the coil 27 is energized the armature 22 presses the disc against the driving pulley so that the disc revolves and contracts the spring to engage the clutch.
