Abstract

394,841. Turning-gear. BAILLY, M., 15, Rue St. Pierre, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Sept. 15, 1932, No. 25683. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1931. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter comprising an internallythreaded pinion 4 engaging a threaded starter spindle 2 with axial play between the threads of the pinion and the spindle, a resilient washer 26 carried by the hub 5 of pinion takes up the axial play when the teeth of the pinion clash with those of an engine gear, to enable the pinion to be turned sufficiently to come into meshing position. As shown, a washer 28 has lugs 29 extending through slots 25 in the hub 5 of the pinion and shaped at their inner ends to bear against one face of the screw threads on the spindle 2. Between the washer 28 and the pinion is the washer 26 having spring tongues 27, Fig. 4, bearing against the end face of the pinion. On rotation of the spindle 2, the pinion moves axially into engagement with the engine gear and is cushioned by spring washers 24 on the spindle 2. If the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the engine gear, the spring tongues 27 yield until the pinion is turned sufficiently to allow meshing to be effected.
