Abstract

228,051. Brown, H. N. May 14, 1924. Turning-gear.-In a starting-device which is disconnected if the engine turns backwards, a handle shaft k and a driven shaft a carrying a clutch member c are movable longitudinally together against the tension of a spring d, the shaft a being driven from the shaft k through a casing t rotating with the shaft k and fixed as regards longitudinal movement; within the casing is a clutch and a member which disengages the clutch when the shaft a turns backwards. As shown in Fig. 1, the casing t is connected to the shaft k by a keyway 3 and a key 2, which also secures a flanged sleeve p connecting the shafts k, a as regards longitudinal movement. The clutch connecting the casing t and the shaft a comprises a smooth sleeve 6 connected to the shaft a by a key 7 and keyway 8. Between the sleeve and the casing are floating segments 10 having clutch rollers 11 in inclined recesses 12, which transmit the clockwise rotation of the shaft k to the shaft a. The disengaging member is a loose ring 15, carrying pawls 17 in engagement with ratchet teeth 19 on the fixed bearing b, and having projections 16 engaging between the segments 10. When the engine and the shaft a turn backwards, the ring 15 is held, and the segments 10 are arrested by the projections 16, so that the rollers 11 come into the deeper ends of the recesses 12 and the rotation is not communicated to the shaft k. In a modification, the shaft k is replaced by a sleeve, a key on the casing t entering a key-way in the sLeeve and an annular recess in the shaft a. In a further form, the roller clutch 10, 11 is replaced by a floating ring having pawls engaging teeth on the casing t and on the sleeve 6; if the engine turns backwards the connection is released by the projections 16, which have inclined faces acting on corresponding faces on the pawls in engagement with the sleeve 6.
