Abstract

140,751. Bendix, V. March 31, 1919, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an engine-starter of the kind described in Specification 160,783, comprising driving means mounted for longitudinal and rotary movement upon a motor-driven shaft and extraneous means for moving the driving-means axially into engagement with an engine member, the driving-means comprises a driving-member capable of independent longitudinal movement. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the driving-member is a pinion 11 and the extraneous means for effecting the axial movement comprises a screw shaft 21 mounted in bearings in a bracket 24 and driven from the motor-driven shaft 1 through pinions 3, 25 fast on the two shafts. The pinion 11 is slidable on keys 12 on a sleeve 5, and is held by a spring 13 against a flange 14. The sleeve 5 and pinion 11 are moved longitudinally by a control gear 27 threaded on the screw shaft and engaging a shroud gear 15 carried by the sleeve 5. The sleeve 5 is connected through a drive spring 6 to an inner sleeve 4, which is loose on the shaft 1 but has clutch jaws 19 for engagement with jaws 20 on the gear 3. At the end of the travel of the pinion 11 into mesh with the engine member 28<a>, the clutch jaws 19, 20 are in engagement and the pinion 11 is driven through the sleeve 4, spring 6, and sleeve 5. When the engine starts, the gear 27 is overrun and returns along the screw shaft until a casing 33 on the gear is held by a spring catch 32 projected outwards from the shaft by centrifugal action. In a modification, the pinion 11 is integral with its hub, which is connected through a drive spring with a shroud gear such as 15 on the outer end of the sleeve 4. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), describes a modification in which the drive spring and sleeve are omitted, the pinion being formed with clutch jaws such as 19 and connected directly to a shroud gear such as 15. Specification 20811/14 is referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
