Abstract
350,043. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. March 11, 1930, No. 7940. Convention date, March 25, 1929. [Class 7 (v).] An electric starter comprises a clutch member 36 driven from a motor 10 and movable axially into engagement with an engine member 37 by means comprising a rod 46, slidably extending through the member 36 and normally moving therewith, and an inertia member 54 actuated by the motor and adapted for movement into abutting engagement with the rod 46. As shown, the armature shaft 12 of the motor 10 carries a pinion 16 meshing with a spur gear 17 on a bell-shaped member integral with a pinion 22, which engages an internal spur gear 23. Integral and coaxial with the gear 23 is a pinion 24 rotatably mounted on a stub shaft 26, which projects from the closed end 27 of a barrel 28. The pinion 24 drives the barrel 28 through planet pinions 29 rotatably mounted on the barrel end 27 and meshing with a fixed internal gear 30. The barrel 28 is connected by a multiple-plate clutch 38 to an internally threaded nut 39 engaging a threaded shaft 43 to which the clutch member 36 is longitudinally splined, relative movement of the nut 39 and shaft 43 being limited by a shoulder 39a and a stop nut 49a. A spring 45 holds the clutch member 36 in engagement with a nut 48 on the end of the rod 46, which passes axially through the shafts 43, 26 and is shouldered at 47 to engage the end of the shaft 43. The inertia member 54, for effecting axial movement of the rod 46 and clutch member 36, is threaded on the shaft 12 of the motor 10 and moves axially by inertia into engagement with a disc 49 on the rod 46. A spring 50 normally retains the disc 49 and rod 46 in the position shown. During the axial movement of the rod 45 the motor armature is set in rotation at high speed ; when the clutch 36, 37 is engaged, the friction clutch 38 allows slip during the time that the member 37 is being brought up to speed, or in the event of backfire during cranking.
