Abstract
452,788. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Feb. 28, 1935, No. 6389. Convention date, March 3, 1934. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 2, 1935.] [Class 7 (v)] In engine-starting mechanism having a pinion or like wheel 11 adapted to move transversely of its axis into and out of mesh with an engine member 12, a mechanical lock is provided for holding the pinion 11 in mesh during the cranking operation and is released in response to a predetermined increase of the starting - motor speed. A gear 3, freely journalled on the shaft 4 of the starting motor and driven from the shaft 4 through a spring 5, is in constant mesh with the pinion 11, which is supported on a bearing member 15 carried by side members 13, 14 journalled on extended smooth portions of the pinion 3 to allow the pinion 11 to swing into mesh with the gear 12 when the starting motor is set in rotation. The pinion 11 is then locked in driving engagement by a toggle 17, 21, the arm 36 of which is provided with an adjustable stop 37. When the engine starts and accelerates the starting- motor, centrifugal elements 29, 31, mounted on the shaft of the starting-motor and connected by springs 34, 35, move radially and engage the stop 37, breaking the toggle and allowing a spring 27 to swing the pinion 11 out of mesh with the gear 12. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the modification forming the subject-matter of Specification 452,789. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
