Abstract

237,353. Hagens, H. April 25, 1924. Turning-gear.-An electric or other power starter comprises coupled discs 11, 12 having driving faces 16 which are brought automatically into simultaneous driving engagement with an engine member 18 on rotation of the starting motor 1 and are disengaged automatically when the engine starts. As shown, the discs are mounted on opposite screw-threads 7, 8 on the motor shaft 6 and are normally held apart by a spring 19. In order that the discs shall rotate in unison, pins 14 carried by the disc 12 pass freely through holes in the disc 11. In modifications, the screw-threaded shaft 6 carrying the discs is driven from the starting motor through a pair of toothed pinions, a pinion engaging an internally-toothed wheel, or planetary gearing.. The movement of the discs into driving engagement with the engine member may be assisted by bob weights on the discs, or by a governor device 25, Fig. 5, the levers 24 of which are connected to a stirrup 23 on the grooved boss of the disc 12, the spring 27 normally serving to hold the disc in the disengaged position.
