Abstract
378,200. Turning-gear. BRETTELL, F. G., 59, Chancery Lane, London.-(Eclipse Aviation Corporation; 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Aug. 5, 1931, No. 22180. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter applicable to the outboard engines of motor boats, in which a starter flywheel 28 rotates an engine member 3 through toothed gearing, the flywheel 28 is directly connected to and rotates in unison with the member 3 during normal running of the engine. As shown, a casing 7 is bolted to the engine member 3, which is preferably the engine flywheel, and is provided with a cover 8 and a light metal housing 37 enclosing the starter flywheel 28. The flywheel 28 is set in rotation by a hand crank engaging pins 27 on a shaft 12 connected by toothed gears 18, 19, 24, 25 to a sleeve 26, on which the flywheel 28 is mounted by means of a friction clutch 29, 31, 32. A spring 33 acting on the clutch disc 32 is tensioned by an adjusting nut 35. The rotating flywheel 28 is then coupled to the engine flywheel 3 by means of a jaw, clutch member 39 normally held out of engagement with a member 40 by a spring 42, and moved into engagement by a rod 44 provided with a transverse pin 45 extending through slots 46 in the shaft 12. The rod 44 is not accessible when the shaft 12 is engaged by the hand crank. When the engine runs under its own power, the clutch 39, 40 overruns and pawls 47 pivoted on the cover 8 are brought by centrifugal action into engagement with recesses in the inner periphery of the flywheel 28, which is thus coupled positively to the engine member 3.
