Abstract

341,271. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1967. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1929. [Classes 7 (iv) and 7 (v).] In an engine starter comprising a flywheel driving a member movable into engagement with the engine, a magneto for ignition at starting is driven from the flywheel through a clutch brought into engagement simultaneously with the engagement of the driving member with the engine, one of the clutch elements being formed on the flywheel. In one form, Fig. 1, the magneto 18 is drivably connected with a shaft 19 carrying a gear 20 engaging teeth 23 on a short shaft 24 mounted in slidable ball bearings 25, 26 and carrying a friction clutch disc 29 for engagement with a clutch face 31 on the hub 5 of the flywheel 4. A leaf spring 33 normally disengages the clutch, and axial movement of the shaft 24, to bring the clutch members 29, 31 into engagement, is effected by a rod 10 pivotally connected to levers 12, 34, the latter bearing against the end of the shaft 24. The lever 12 is also connected by a link 14 to a lever 15 on a rock shaft 16 actuating means such as described in Specification 280,746, [Class 7 (v), Internal-combustion engines, Starting &c.], for shifting a starting clutch 2 into engagement with the engine. A catch 17 engaging the lever 15 normally holds the clutch 2 in disengaged position. Means for setting the flywheel in rotation comprises a manually driven shaft 8 connected through a ratchet jaw clutch 9 to gearing such as described in Specification 280,746 that meshes with an element o f the reduction gearing between the flywheel and the starting clutch 2. In a modification, Fig. 4, the shaft 24 carrying the clutch disc 29 is shifted axially by a cam 47 on a shaft 48 actuated by means of an arm 49 connected by a spring 50 to a rotatable ring 43 actuated by a pull rod 44. The ring 43 also actuates a lever 40 connected by a link 38 to a lever 39 on the rock shaft 16 for shifting the starter clutch 2. In this form, a hand cranking-shaft extends at right angles to the axis of the starter and may be universally jointed.
