[Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter in which the rotation of a flywheel 1 is transmitted to the starter clutch 17 through reduction gearing 2 .. 7 comprising planet wheels 7 in engagement with an internally toothed ring 8, the planet wheels 7 drive the clutch member 17 through sleeve members 15, 16, and the toothed. ring 8 is connected to a fixed outer casing by a multiple-disc friction coupling 9 allowing slip in the event of overload. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, the carrier 12 for the planet wheels is integral with the sleeve 15, which has inclined teeth in engagement with corresponding teeth on the sleeve 16 of the jaw clutch 17. The clutch 17 is moved into engagement with the engine shaft by a sleeve 19 actuated by a crank pin 20 on the shaft of a control lever 21, or by a rack and pinion device, and is held in engagement by the action of the inclined teeth on the sleeves 15, 16. The flywheel is set in rotation by means of a cranking shaft 26 acting through toothed gearing 22, 23 and bevel wheels 14, 13 ; the wheel 13 being mounted on the hub 15 of the planet carrier 12 by means of a nut 29 and a sleeve 27, Fig. 5, splined on the hub 15. The wheel 13 may be mounted at either end of the sleeve 15, in order to drive the flywheel in either direction, or an additional gear may be interposed between the gears 22, 23 in order to reverse the direction of rotation. The sleeve member 15 may be supported by a single ball bearing, by ball bearings 24, 25, Fig. 1, or by two ball bearings arranged one at each end of the sleeve ; and the double pinion 5, 6 may be supported by one or two ball bearings.
