Abstract

650,873. Electromagnetic clutches. SOC. E.P.I.C., ELECTRICITE, PRODUITS INDUSTRIELS & CHIMIQUES. Jan. 13, 1947, No. 1132. Convention date, May 30, 1945. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXIV] In a planetary gear system comprising sunwheel 24, planet carrier 32, and driven annulus 37, eddy current electromagnetic clutches 4, 5 provide the connecting means between a driving shaft 1 and carrier 32 or sun-wheel 24, and are combined with friction means to take up oscillations in the transmission. Coils 7, 9 disposed in pole members 8, 10 and spaced by a member 6, are carried on a drum 3 secured to the driving-shaft 1. Armatures 20, 25 secured to carrier 32 and sun-wheel 24 have teeth 21, 26 formed on their flanged peripheries and are disposed in close proximity to similar teeth formed on pole members 7, 8 but displaced slightly axially with respect thereto. Friction surfaces 22, 28 formed on the armatures 20, 25 cooperate with similar surfaces 23, 10<SP>1</SP> when the clutches are respectively engaged to damp the transfer of oscillations from the driving to the driven elements. Armature 20 is splined on to a hub 18 integral with the planet carriers 32, and a spring 19 maintains the armature in the disengaged position. An electromagnetic brake 41 is disposed on the casing 39 for braking the armature 25, and a toothed annulus 42 is adapted to co-operate with the teeth 36 of a cup member 35 secured to the planet carrier for braking the latter. Clutches 4, 5 are energized by current supplied to slip-rings 11, 12. The housing may be sub-divided by a partition 43, and the planetary gearing portion filled with oil. In operation, an over-drive is effected by engagement of clutch 4 and brake 41, a direct drive by engagement of clutches 4, 5, and a reverse drive by engagement of clutch 5 and braking means 42. Specification 612,320 is referred to.
