472,953. Change speed gearing. ALVIS, Ltd., and CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-. May 11, 1937, No. 13347. [Class 80 (ii)] A two-speed gear suitable for a vehicle tail-shaft drive comprises a one-way clutch 8 which picks up a direct drive between the tail-shaft 1 of the gear box (not shown) and an ultimately-driven shaft 3, allowing the vehicle to freewheel on that drive. Planet pinions 7 on a carrier 5 fast on the shaft 1 mesh with an annulus 4 fast on the shaft 3, and with a loose sun-gear 6 to which is splined a magnetic armature disc 9. When the armature 9 is attracted against an electromagnet 12 carried by the annulus 4, the gearing turns solid on direct drive without freewheeling. When the armature 9 is alternatively attracted to a fixed electromagnet 11, the sun 6 is held fast and the annulus 4 and shaft 3 are overdriven with overrunning at the one-way clutch 8, but without freewheeling of the vehicle.
