Abstract

482,827. Variable - speed gearing. FIAT SOC. ANON. Oct. 5, 1936, No. 26990. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] In a planetary change-speed gear one element of the train is held stationary by an electromagnetic brake 8 acting on an armature 6 connected to the annulus member 5 of the train, the sun 2 being driven by the driving shaft 1 and the planet carrier (not shown) constituting the driven member of the gear. Springs 9 tend to keep the armature 6 in frictional engagement with a member 4 connected to the sun 2 and the driving shaft 1 for direct drive, when the gear rotates solid. On energizing the electromagnets 8 the armature 6 is withdrawn from frictional engagement with the member 4 and is held stationary, a reduced speed of the driven planet carrier being thus obtained. Two such trains may be arranged in series, which arrangement provides for four speeds by operation of the two clutches together or singly.
