Abstract
28,114. Royce, F. H., and Rolls-Royce, Ltd. Dec. 5. Variable - speed and reversing epicyclic gearing comprises a clutch for direct driving and three epicyclic trains for obtaining two reduced speeds and reversed driving. The planetpinions e of the train for giving the middle speed and the planet-pinions c of the train for giving the low speed are carried by members n, e, respectively, both of which are secured to the driven shaft g. The internally-toothed ring o of the middlespeed train and the sun - gear a of the lowspeed train are both secured to the driving- shaft b, while the sungear k of the former train and the internallytoothed ring f of the latter train are adapted to be held by brakes r, j, respectively, to render these trains severally operative. The clutch members p, s, which are mutually engaged for the high-speed drive, are arranged between the train a, c, f and the train t, u, w for reversed driving. The sun-gear t is connected by a web t<2> and fly-wheel x to the shaft b and the internally-toothed ring w is connected by a sleeve n<2> to the member n and shaft g. The reverse drive is brought into operation by applying a brake z to the carrier v of the planet-pinions u.
