Abstract

123,753. Garin, H. C. Blanc-. Feb. 20, 1918, [Convention date]. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Relates to epicyclic gearing for automobiles &c. capable of giving reduced variable-speeds in a forward and reverse direction, and a speed equal to that of the driving shaft. It comprises two groups of epicyclic gearing, the planet carrier of the first group being fixed to the driving shaft and that of the second group to the driven shaft. The first group reduces and reverses the motion of the driving shaft, whilst the second group, which is driven from the first group, restores the direction of motion to that of the driving shaft, and further reduces the speed. Variations of speed and direction of motion are obtained by variously holding stationary the sun-wheels of the two groups by means such as brakes. In the form shown, the planet carrier A<2> of the first group A<1> is attached to the driving shaft A, and the carrier B<2> of the second group B<1> is attached to the driven shaft B. The carrier A<2> carries a pair of planet pinions a<4>, a<5> gearing with sun-wheels g, e, a second pair of planet pinions gearing with sun-wheels c, e, and a stepped planet pinion a<2>, a<3> gearing with the sun-wheels f, e. The sunwheels c, g, f are attached respectively to brakedisks c<1>, g<1>, f<1>, and the sun-wheel e is fixed on a sleeve e<1> which carries a sun-wheel e<2> gearing with planet pinions on the carrier B<2> of the second planetary group B<1>. The group B' is similar to the group A<1>, but its members are arranged in reverse order, and various reduced direct and reversed speeds, and a direct drive, are obtained by variously holding stationary the disks g<1>, c, f<1>, i<1>, k', m<1>. Intermediate pinions may be placed between the sleeve e' and the group B<1> to obtain further differences in speed.
