[Class 7 (v)] An engine starter comprises a pinion 6 splined on a sleeve 4 threaded on a sleeve 2 mounted on the shaft 1 of a starting motor, the pinion being normally held against a spring clip 9 or the like by a spring 7 interposed between the pinion and a flange 8 on the sleeve 4. On rotation of the shaft 1, the sleeve 4 and the pinion travel axially, to engage the pinion with the teeth of the engine flywheel, against the resistance of a light coil spring 11 between a collar 12 fixed on the sleeve 2 and a slidable collar 13 abutting against the flangeless end of the sleeve 4.
