Abstract
462,687.. Turning-gear; stuffing-box substitutes. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and GOSSLING, C. E. Sept. 13, 1935, No. 25427. [Class 7 (v)] [Also in Group XXVI] In an engine starter in which a motor is connected through a gear train and a friction clutch c to a clutch member b having a claw a and advanced into engagement with an engine part by a screw connection d, the member b is embraced by a non-rotatable flexible friction device f which under the action of a spring g forms an oil seal, and also opposes rotation of the member b to cause it to advance axially under the action of the screw d. As shown in Fig. 1, the device f is a leather ring held by a spring garter g in contact with the cylindrical surface 'of the member b. The ring f is carried by a sheet metal annulus h held in position by a plate i. In a modification, Fig. 3, an annular flexible member k of leather or other material is held by a spring m in contact with a flange l on the member b.
