Abstract
472,689. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO. March 28, 1936, No. 9275. Convention date, March 30, 1935. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine-starter drive of the type in which the meshing of a pinion 5 with an engine gear 6 is controlled manually and the demeshing is effected automatically when the engine starts, a positive locking means 42 holds the pinion in mesh with the gear 6 until the engine starts and is released in response to the speed of rotation of the pinion. As shown, the pinion 5 is freely journalled on the starting-motor shaft 2 and is rigidly connected to a barrel 7 and a driven clutch member 9 in the end of the barrel. A threaded sleeve 3 is splined to slide on the shaft 2 and a nut 19 threaded on the sleeve has a conical surface normally held by a spring 27 in light frictional with a surface 22 of the clutch member 9. A stop and clutch member 23 fixed on the end of the sleeve 3 has a conical surface for engagement contact with a surface 26 of the member 9. The locking means 42 consists of spring-pressed radial detents carried by the barrel 7. The sleeve 3 is moved axially to engage the pinion 5 with the engine gear 6, by means of a lever 31 actuated by a pedal and connected by linkage 41 to a starting switch 39. When the pinion is almost fully in mesh and the switch 39 is closed, rotation of the shaft 2 and sleeve 3 advances the clutch member 19 and the barrel 7 to the left, forcing the detents 42 over the shoulder 43 into locking engagement with the end face of the clutch member 23, and wedging together the clutch members 9, 19, 23 to transmit torque to the pinion 5. When the engine starts, the clutch member 19 returns on the threaded sleeve, and the detents 42 are withdrawn by centrifugal action on sufficient speed being reached, whereupon the barrel 7 is moved to the right by the spring 27 to demesh the pinion. This movement is limited by a stop 40. On the release of the lever 31, the sleeve 3 threads itself through the clutch element 19, movement of the barrel 7 being prevented by a bracket 47 engaged by a ring 16 on the barrel.
