Abstract
159,983. Beasley, W. E. Dec. 9, 1919. Turning-gear.-A starting-handle h turns the engine shaft a through an intermediate shaft c and a friction clutch b, b<1> held in engagement by a spring e. If the engine starts backwards, the shaft c is held by a pawl o engaging a ratchetwheel n on the shaft and the clutch is disengaged by the action of the inter-engaging waved ends b<2> of the hubs of the clutch members. The shaft k of the handle h engages the shaft c by means of a ratchet clutch f<1>, and the shafts c, k are, supported in depending brackets d, m. In a modification, the adjacent ends of the clutch hubs or of the shafts a, c are each fitted with an annular series of anti-friction balls, the balls in each series extending into the spaces between the balls of the other series. In another form, the bracket m is omitted, the shaft k has a conical extension entering a recess in the end of the shaft c, and the bracket d extends laterally from the supporting frame. The clutch b, b<1> may be held out of engagement, when the engine has started, by a lever pivoted on the bracket d and having a cam engaging the face of the ratchet-wheel n.
