[Class 7 (v).] In a starting device in which a clutch member b on the shaft a of the starting handle is disengaged from the clutch member c<1> on the engine shaft on backward rotation of the engine shaft, a ring member k mounted on the shaft a has ratchet teeth k<1> for engagement with notches m in the face of a ring member f freely rotatable on the shaft a. The member f also has peripheral ratchet teeth f<1> engaged by spring- pressed pawls g slidable in the bearing B. If the engine back-fires when started, the member f is held by the pawls g, and the shaft a is moved axially to disengage the clutch members b, c<1> by the interengaging inclined faces of the teeth k<1> and notches m.
