[Class 7 (v).] In a starting-handle for internal - combustion engines in which a friction clutch is released on backward rotation of the engine, the clutch comprises a sleeve 8 with a conical bore engaging a conical clutch member 7 on an intermediate shaft 4 positively coupled at 5 to the engine shaft 6. Recesses 9, 10 at the ends of the sleeve 8 are provided with inclined faces, the recesses 9 being engaged by teeth 11 on a hub 2 having ratchet teeth 3 engaged by a pawl 26 on the handle 1. The recesses 10 are engaged by teeth 14 on a ring 15 having a free-wheel connection with a fixed ring 18. A spring 12 bears against a collar 13 on the sleeve 8. When the handle 1 is turned, the clutch 7, 8 is held in engagement by the action of the inclined faces of the teeth 11 and recesses 9. If the engine shaft turns backwards, the ring 15 is held by the free-wheel connection and the clutch 7, 8 is disengaged by the inclined faces of the teeth 14 and recesses 10.
