Abstract
100,425. Walters, J. F. Jan. 17, 1916. Turning-gear.-A starting-handle 1, Fig. 1, having means for preventing damage in the event of a back-fire, rotates, through a one-way clutch 5, a spindle 10 having dogs 11 which engage similar dogs in the engine shaft 9. The part 4 of the oneway clutch 5, which is secured to the spindle 10 by a pin 15, has teeth 14 which engage corresponding teeth on the driven part 5<1> of a second oneway clutch 3<1>. When rotating the spindle 10 in a clockwise direction at starting, the clutch member 5<1> runs free, but in the event of a back-fire, the member 5<1> is locked, thus disengaging the clutches and the dogs 11. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the clutch members 5, 5<1> are connected indirectly through a slotted sleeve 32 having teeth (not shown), which engage corresponding teeth on the projecting sleeve 4<1> of the clutch member 5<1>. The clutch member 5 rotates the spindle 10 through a pin 33, which is fixed to the spindle and engages the slot 34 in the sleeve 32. In the event of a back-fire, the sleeve 32 slides upon the spindle and disengages the clutch 5 and the start. ing-handle, the dogs (not shown) on the spindle and the engine shaft remaining unclutched. In a further modification the sleeve 4<1> of the clutch member 5<1>, Fig. 1, is mounted upon a second sleeve secured to the spindle 10. Upon back-firing, the second sleeve, which has teeth engaging the clutch member 5, disengages the starting-handle. In the kickstarter shown in Fig. 10, the starting-handle is replaced by a pedal lever 1 which rotates the clutch member 4 in a clockwise direction, and the clutch-member, upon a back-fire, slides in the hub of the lever 1 out of engagement with the teeth on the second clutch member 4<1>. The clutch members 4. 4' are held in their starting positions by a spring 21, the member 4 being retained in its withdrawn position by a finger carried by a foot-lever 28, which drops into a groove 26 in an extension of the retracted member. In a further modification, inclined teeth on a starting-handle engage similar teeth on one of the members of a one-way clutch, the shaft supporting the handle also carrying a second one-way clutch driving a chain-wheel connected to the engine shaft. Upon a back-fire, the one-way clutch in the chain-wheel reverses the motion of the starting-handle shaft, locks the other one-way clutch, and disengages the handle. In the modification shown in Fig. 15 a drum 40, which is actuated by a hand-driven belt, replaces the starting-handle. The one-way clutch 5 actuates through a pin 46 carried by a sleeve 4 the member 5<1> of a second one-way clutch. Upon a back-fire, the clutch 5' is locked, and, the sleeve 4 and clutch 5 being free, the pin 46 is disengaged. The drum is held in its normal position by a spring 47.
