Abstract

112,343. Kluijtmans, J. J. M. H., and Gardam, A. M. H. Feb. 19, 1917. Turning-gear.-In a starting-device in which a hand-lever 6 or a pedal slides a driving-pinion 4 into engagement with a gear wheel 3 on the engine fly-wheel and then effects the rotation of the pinion, the pinion 4 is secured to a sleeve 17 slidable on a shaft 15, and has an annular recess engaged by a bell-crank lever 20, which is operated by a cam 7 on the lever 6 to slide the pinion 4 into mesh with the gear 3. Clutch faces in the boss of the pinion 4 then engage a clutch 19 on the shaft 15, which is driven from a quadrant 9 on the handle 6 through gearing 10, 12, 13 and a shaft 14 connected with the shaft 15 by a universal joint 16. The clutch members are normally disengaged by a spring. The shaft 15 is adjustably supported by a bracket 23, 24. The pinion 10 is in ratchet engagement with its shaft 11, so that it is not rotated in the event of back-fire.
