Abstract

24,527. Barber, J. T. Nov. 5. Gas and like engines, starting. The crank-shaft 1 of a motor-car, boat, or other engine is provided with a clutch member 2, which engages a handoperated clutch member 3, a spring 5 being interposed between them. A ratchet disk 7 is mounted so as to be capable of rotating freely on a sleeve around the clutch member 3, and is normally pressed into engagement with the fixed disk 6 by a spring 8. A spring-pressed pawl 10 is adapted to engage teeth on the disk 7, and is carried by a disk 11 secured to the shaft 4. When a back-fire occurs, the pawl 10 rotates the disk 7, the rotation of which relatively to the disk 6 throws the clutch members 2, 3 out of gear.
