Abstract

26,356. Exon, E. W., and Towl, A. Pearce-. Nov. 16. Turning - gear. - A chain 7, connected at one end through a turn-buckle 20 and at the other end through a spring 14 to a hand-lever 12, passes round a wheel 16 mounted through a one-way clutch on one member of a clutch. This member is moved axially by a foot-lever against spring pressure into engagement with a second clutch member on the engine shaft, and the lever oscillated to start the engine. To prevent damage on reversal of rotation due to premature ignition, some of the cross-pieces on the chain are omitted. The first clutch member may be mounted on the engine shaft or on a separate spindle in alinement with the engine shaft. The chain at the spring-connected end may be attached to the pivot 13 of the hand-lever.
