Abstract

Turning-gear.-A starting-handle D rotates a fly-wheel B connected by a coiled spring A to the engine shaft or to a shaft geared therewith, and is axially displaced by the contraction of the spring in the event of a premature ignition, either to bring the fly-wheel into direct or frictional engagement with a fixed abutment, or to disconnect it from the starting-handle. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the fly-wheel B has a sleeve B' turning on the shaft of a sprocket wheel C which drives the engine through a chain. The spring A is connected to the fly-wheel and to the wheel C. If premature ignition occurs, the spring A shortens to such an extent that the fly-wheel is axially displaced into contact with a fixed abutment E, and thereby the shock on the handle D is reduced. Frictional material 0 may be interposed between the fly-wheel and the abutment. In a modification, the sha.ft of the handle D has a squared end entering a squared hole in the fly-wheel so that. when this is displaced abnormally, the shaft is disconnected from the fly-wheel. In another modification, in which the handle has to be pushed inwards in order that a clutch on the end of its shaft may engage a clutch on the fly-wheel shaft, abnormal displacement of the fly-wheel disengages the clutch.
