Clutches, ratchet.-In a power starter for internalcombustion engines, wherein a pinion moves axially on an electrically or otherwise driven shaft to engage with the engine fly-wheel, the pinion b is connected to the shaft d by links j having ball heads. A spring u keeps the pinion in its normal position out of gear. On commencement of rotation of the shaft d, the inertia of the pinion causes it to lag behind the shaft and the links then effect some axial movement; when the pinion is partly in gear, the retarding effect of the fly-wheel causes complete axial movement which closes the clutch c, c<1> carried by the pinion and shaft. When the engine runs faster than the motor will turn it, the pinion is disengaged. The links may be straight or curved, and they may be normally parallel to the shaft. They may be formed of spiral springs ; the spring u may be then dispensed with.
