842. Deluce, S. A. N., and Lysons, H. S. Jan. 13. Turning-gear.- A handle b is connected by a face clutch c to a starting shaft d, which is connected to the engine shaft by a claw clutch e. An adjustable spring f normally keeps the members of clutch c in engagement. In operation, the whole apparatus is moved axially until the clutch e engages the motor shaft, which disengages the starting-apparatus in the known manner when the engine rotates under its own power. If the engine rotates in the reverse direction, the hub of the handle is arrested by a friction pawl i, and the inclined teeth on the clutch c then disengage the clutch e. In a modified form, the clutch e is replaced by a pawl or ratchet drive. The Provisional Specification also states that a plunger, connected to one of the couplings, may be actuated by the pressure due to premature ignition to release the starting-handle from the motor shaft.
